Set in a proscenium-thrust style theatre, this design is representational of the false appearances and translucent personas of the characters in the play. Song’s visage is constantly questioned, revealed, and doubted – much like this changing, translucent design. Inked sliders move throughout each scene to provide entrances, interior looks, exterior street scenes, and exits for characters. Chinese lattice panels set the tone for the play, while also practically providing Song with a place to change costume in silhouette. The translucencies are an abstract depiction of France and Beijing with lettering of thematic elements following the contours of paint strokes.
