The story of Oedipus is powerful and otherworldly, which inspired me to research the powers of nature overtaking mankind’s footsteps, such as natural disasters overtaking architectural authority. Images provoked emotion found in the play, which led me to start placing Oedipus in places where control is limited, and nature will overcome human action. Tile is overtaken by a sand dune, spilling over into the playing area. Ruins of a portico are uncovered, where hourglasses replace the front two columns. The hourglasses are preset for the performance with sand, falling throughout the show. They crack, and break open after Oedipus gouges his eyes out, as a symbol of despair, loss of control, and ultimate consequence.
