This theoretical design focused on the abstraction of modernity within a period piece. Research began with French theatre under the reign of Louis XIV, which was a composition of many different scenic design styles. From the medieval cycle plays to the pop-up theatres of Commedia Dell’Arte, French theatre was a compilation of design styles that depended on social status. Molière’s comic excessiveness guided the direction of this design, from the exaggerated scale to the abundant textures in the wall panels. In 2017, our sense of luxury spans from high fashion branding to minimalist, plush interior design. This aspect of modernity unified the design composition while forming an architectural shell for this play of excessive, hypocritical behavior to take place.
